Isn't that P-tex/rubber/cork part meant to be hairied-up? Sounds like the grip section on my Fischer Zeros.
There have been various article on the web on just how to tune the "rubbing" (hairy) skis. I can't recall just where to find them now, but here's how I do it:
I wrap sandpaper around a cork and sand the grip section with stokes from tail to tip. I use anywhere from 100 to 60 grit. The more grip needed, the rougher the grit. I feather the grip toward the ends of the zone, just like with wax. I recall one of the sources said to give one last light stroke with 100 grit from tip to tail, and another said to make a quick pass with a torch. Last, treat with your choice of anti-ice, such as the Swiz zero spray, Helix, etc. I usually use Zardoz Notwax. Dave Ford showed me that rubbing with a solid block of fluor such as Jetstream works, too.
I used my Zeros @ 50 degrees on man-made snow in the Twin Cities last week, and was surprised how great they were. Fast with good grip.
