This past weekend I discovered the joys of taking a gondola down off a mountain after hiking the Long Trail up Mount Mansfield.

I'm looking for recommendations for other areas with nice trails going up (steady incline, relatively scenic) and easy access to an operating lift for going down. (And I realize there is a training benefit to going down, but my body just can't take it any more.)

    Any suggestions appreciated,

    Jon

Wildcat Mountain in Jackson, NH could be an option. While the hiking-specific trails up the mountain aren't exactly "steady", the ski trails are an option, are quite scenic, and they run a gondola in the summer.

Cannon Mountain (NH) has an aerial tramway that operates through mid/late October; and I think you can buy tickets at the summit. They are rabidly opposed to anyone hiking on the ski trails, but there are "hiking trails" that also lead to the summit. Not sure if anyone has ever been captured and punished for hiking on the ski trails, but I and others have received a stern "talking to" for doing so.

I know you are certainly allowed to hike on the Wildcat trails. I have done ski-walking intervals there before with a large team, and also hiked down from the summit when conditions made the Wildcat Ridge Trail (AT) a dicey proposition on tired legs.
