So I've heard different things as to the ideal way to base prep a new pair of skis. As I just got a pair I want to be race ready by next weekend, any advice out there? I've heard of alternating between warm and cold waxes for penetration and durability, respectively, but other websites I've looked up tonight advocate starting warm, then progressively dropping through your collection and ending on cold, or just going with several layers of your warmest wax straight up.

    Any thoughts?

What has been recommended to me by several sources, including Boulder Nordic and members of the Toko Tech Team is to do 3-4 coats of yellow or another very warm wax, scraping and brushing between, then a coat of cold wax like CH6. On top of that, you are ready for the wax of the day.

    Hey,

You might want to take a look at Swix Waxing School. They recommend a quite time and also wax intensive method (well, they sell the stuff don't they...) which consists of roughly 12 layers with various steps in between. I followed that path for my latest pair of skating skis and I'm very satisfied with the result. Have to say I dropped two soft wax applications making it 2 x 3 instead 2x4. Required time for a pair is well beyond two hours, but I was amazed at how much wax new skis can actually suck up.

    Hope that helps.

    Best regards

Toko also recommends lots of soft wax. Have a look at http://www.tokous.com/Manuals/Nordic%20Tech%20Manual.pdf and search for 'new skis' for a one sentence version.

The toko answer for new skis is almost the same as the cure for too much fluoro. If you get your skis ground, get the hotbox treatment for an almost instant happy base.

We do know that lots of Olympians had skis ground less than 24 hours before race time, so there is a solution. It may involve having your wax tech work all night :-(
