How many people are heading out to west Yellowstone this year? How many times have you been there?

I personally am not going this season. I've been out to the fest 4 times over the last 10 years though. I plan to go again some day soon. Just not this season

Likewise, my wife announced this morning that she would be interested in looking into the possibility of Yellowstone at Christmas. We have never been there before, so I would welcome any and all feedback, including: Where to fly to? Where to stay/eat? What kind of conditions can we expect (can I leave any of the wax box at home)? Is anything going on out there (special events) that would collide with a vacation? No detail is too small, so if you have been there I would welcome and deeply appreciate your feedback. Thanks in advance...OMW

Wow - every detail? That could take awhile.

Flying: Closest is Bozeman - definitely the most convenient. You can usually fly into Salt Lake for much cheaper, so if you are looking to save and don't mind the drive, check it out.

You can get a shuttle from Bozeman, so you don't necessarily have to rent a car.

There are tons of places to stay - check out the Ski Festival Website for some. I usually prefer a place where I can cook my own food, but there are plenty of dining options. You should definitely hit Wild West PIzza if you go. There are some good options for self-contained cabins that have a good kitchen.

If you want to wax your skis, bring you wax box. Or at least the basics. It is hard to predict conditions, but hopefully by Christmas they should be stable and good. I would leave the klister at home and bring a selection of hard waxes and a few gliders to cover yourself.

West is a great place to ski. There are plenty of kilometers, but if you ski for more than a few days you will definitely repeat the trails over and over. You can ski on the road into Yellowstone which can be super fun. People will ski to Old Faithful and back - a very long day...

For more info on skiing get in touch with Free Heel and Wheel, the ski and bike shop in West. It is a great place, and the staff super helpful. They will be able to provide lots of info.
